Ed Sheeran 'quits' social media

BBC NEWS
Singer Ed Sheeran has announced he is "taking a break" from social media as he is "seeing the world through a screen and not my eyes".
Writing on his Instagram account, the singer explained he was "taking the opportunity of not having to be anywhere... to travel the world".
He also confirmed to fans that his third album is "on its way" and "is the best thing I have made thus far".
Sheeran has 16 million Twitter and 5.5 million Instagram followers.
He has just completed a world tour of his number one album x (pronounced "multiply") in Auckland, New Zealand.
Before the final show, he also tweeted that he was "buggering off for a while".
His world tour saw him play three sold out dates at London's Wembley Stadium.
His second album x topped the chart in the UK, Australia and the US and was nominated for album of the year at the Grammys. It won the Brit award in the same category.
Sheeran recently set up his own label, Gingerbread Man Records, and signed newcomer Jamie Lawson - whose album topped the UK chart - and Northern Irish singer Foy Vance.
The headline of this article grabbed my attention as who can 'quit' social media with his amount of fame? it makes you want to read more to find out how and why he is choosing to do so. There is some truth in what he is saying as you can find out pretty much anything o social media without even having to leave your house, also most people are too glued to their phone to see the real picture of the outside world not just one posted on instagram or facebook. The article shows Eds success and what he is planning to do for the future which should keep his fame up as if he did just 'quit' social media without a trace people may be un aware of what is going on. BBC news is quite factual and is a right wing news paper due to the events it covers in which none of them are criticised by the news paper.

Jimmy Carter says his cancer is gone

BBC NEWS

Former US President Jimmy Carter has said that his brain cancer is gone.

"My most recent MRI brain scan did not reveal any signs of the original cancer spots nor any new ones," Mr Carter said in a statement.
The 91-year-old first announced the news during a Sunday school class in Plains, Georgia.
Mr Carter, who was president from 1977 to 1981 and won a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002, revealed his illness in August.
Doctors have been treating four small melanoma lesions on his brain.
Last month, Mr Carter said he was responding well to treatment and there were no signs of further cancer growth.
Jill Stuckey, a member of the congregation at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper that Mr Carter had been teaching the class of about 350 people when he made the announcement.
"He said he got a scan this week and the cancer was gone," she said.
"The church, everybody here, just erupted in applause."

Human rights advocate

Mr Carter revealed in August that cancer initially found in his liver had spread to four spots on his brain. The lesion on his liver was removed on 12 August.
After leaving the White House, Mr Carter founded the Carter Center, which focuses on human-rights efforts and political mediation.
He has remained active with the centre ever since.
Mr Carter - a Georgia Democrat - won the Nobel Peace prize for his commitment to finding peaceful solutions to international conflicts and his work with human rights and democracy initiatives.
This stories headline caught my eye for personal reasons, 'Jimmy Carter says his cancer is gone'  made me click on it straight away as there are millions of people suffering from cancer, my dad being one of them so i wanted to find out how it just disappeared. The story is very inspirational and positive which is a change for news stories as they are mostly negative. It also gives people a glimpse of hope that maybe the deadly illness does have a way of exiting peoples lives instead of just taking them.

Muslim teenager 'judged by Heathrow Airport staff'

BBC NEWS
An American Muslim was detained for 13 hours after flying into a UK airport because of her faith, she says.
Ayan Mohamud, 18, who arrived at Heathrow Airport, said she felt she was being "judged" in the wake of the Paris terror attacks.
"I wasn't expecting to be interrogated or held in a room for hours," said Ms Mohamud, who left the US for the first time, to visit family in Leicester.
The UK Border Agency (UKBA) said the checks were for immigration purposes.
The headline of this story attracted me as it shows the stereotypical views of todays generation since the attack on france, everyone seems to have it in their head that muslims are all terrorists which is really not the case. ISIS and the muslim religion are completely different and both share slight different beliefs. It just shows that everyone gets judged and stereotyped when they do nothing wrong.

Audiences

Christmas Adverts

Different adverts have different audiences to suite the products they are trying to sell and ways to target these different audiences is to include things that are going to attract different groups of people.

The Waitrose Christmas advert is based on food, this suggests that the producers are focusing on an adult audience due to the fact that they are normally the ones who do the cooking and shopping at Christmas. The producer added Heston Blumenthal which is a good advertisement attraction as It encourages people to buy food from Waitrose in hope that it will be just as good as the famous chefs. The advert also attracts you to all the festive food they offer in general along with a happy family atmosphere which could suggest they were trying to create the sense that if you buy there food you will have a fun filled perfect Christmas just like them.

The John Lewis advert seems to be directed a children, the penguin and the little boy have a really cute bond which may draw attention for the children as they may feel a sense of jealousy and feel they must have a penguin like that too, it attracts their attention first as the penguins irresistible and could make anyone's heart melt. they use toys and cuddly animals to attract their audience as what children don't love those two things? it creates a sense of excitement for Christmas and they would probably try and persuade their parents to got John Lewis so thy can be just like the little boy.

The Sainsbury's advert 2015 seems to have an audience based on family, it is filled with humour and care. The advert starts on Mog the cat which is more for children as It creates humour and draws them in as its a well known character and creates an aspect of fun and story telling. The ending of the advert is based more on adults as it shows the burnt turkey coming out of the house, this is a remake of a real situation and shows that anything can go wrong,  there is a sense of hope when all the neighbourhood come to help them and have a bright Christmas which shows that the advert is based at everyone as an inspiration for the fact that anything can happen but life's what you make it.

War graves 'desecrated' in west London

BBC News

War graves in a cemetery in west London dedicated to Australians who died in World War One have been defaced with spray paint.
Harefield churchyard in Hillingdon contains 120 World War One graves, mostly those of Australians who died in the Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield Park.
A local councillor said the graves had been found defaced on Sunday morning.
The Met Police are investigating and described the crime as "wrong".

This incident is shocking and shows the disrespect some people have for the people who helped our country. The headline stood out for me as it shocked me that people have such little respect and have the confidence to ruin such a big part of history.

Plot

Thriller Movie-Teen

Thalia Kennedy is a witness to a tragic car accident, which wasn't really an accident. Thalia sees a man face down in his smashed up car, runs to help and tries to release the man to save him, not realising what she was getting herself in to. Gasping for breath from the impact, he tells her to run as they will get her too, but who? He dies within seconds, not releasing any information about the dramatic life she is about to enter for double crossing the Kabal.  She jumps up and looks around only to see a car racing towards her, was this a warning? She froze with terror as a shot rang above her head.  She realises she is now a victim and runs for her life, completely oblivious to the situation she is now in. She was now a target of the underworld, exempt from police capture and at the mercy of a very dangerous gang called the Kabal. Thalia has a long journey to outrun the Kabal, learning that running is not going to stop the Kabal, she has to fight back. Learning new skills on the way, with her trained assassin fiance. Will they turn into the next Bonnie and Clyde or will they face the consequences of the devil? The Kabal systematically murder a list of people who they believe have double crossed them and people who seek dark secrets which could effect the whole of society. These secrets are held inside a script drive controlled by the fierce leader storm AKA Katrina Mustov. Explosions, deaths and tragedy will it bring anyone down?

Head of the gang-  Storm AKA Katrina Mustov

 Thalia fiance- Rico Fernandas

have fun of their own.  They are like family to the Mustov sisters as they have similar backgrounds and all grew up together.

Rocky AKA Valentina Mustov

Storms' psycho sister Rocky shares a close relationship with her sister. They share the same qualities and she is Storms' weak point...they would die for each other. They might as well be the same person as they are so similar. BBC News report
A teenage girl has been raped in a woods in south-west London.
The 13-year-old was stopped by a man in West Drive, near Tooting Bec Common, and was forced into the woods before being assaulted.
The man is described as white, aged approximately 20, about 6ft tall with a slim build, dark eyes and was clean shaven.
Police have stepped up patrols in the area to provide reassurance following the attack on Thursday evening.
Det Insp Keith Ward said: "This was a horrific attack on a vulnerable young girl who was forced by this man into a secluded area and raped.
"The victim was able to provide a very good description of her attacker and we are keen to catch him before he has the opportunity to strike again."
The rapist was wearing a tracksuit top and bottoms with three white stripes down the sides, black trainers and a black woolly hat with black gloves when he carried out the assault.
I think this story is shocking, it shows that anything can happen to anyone with complete surprise. It also shows how horrible and disgusting some people actually are and that you need to be careful and aware of these people which you could walk past and not have the slightest clue of the persons true nature. what also makes it shocking is the fact that it is so close to home which causes a cause of concern for yourself and friends and family around you.

Controversial Adverts

KFC Advert 2003

This KFC advert received 1,671 complaints making it one of the highest controversial adverts since 2003. People believed that it encouraged bad eating habits among children, portraying that it is ok to talk with your mouthful and eat with your mouth open.

I agree to this as it is a genuinely disgusting advert as parents spend time making sure that their children eat correctly and politely, providing knowledge on what is right and what is wrong, only to be presented bad table manners on TV for everyone to see.  Its not just the fact that it could affect the manners of children which make this advert controversial, it also makes KFC look bad as people love a good old KFC but if the adverts bad it makes them look bad due to poorly thought out adverts.

Human chain saves woman and PC from Kingston Bridge fall

A policeman who grabbed hold of a woman as she tried to jump off a London bridge himself had to be rescued when he was dragged over a barrier.
Metropolitan Police officer Fab Ahmed was alerted to a woman on Kingston Bridge on 28 October.
As she jumped, PC Ahmed grabbed hold of her. His heavy body armour meant he toppled forwards and over the railings.
Two of his colleagues and a passing fireman reacted quickly and managed to pull both him and the woman to safety.
The woman was met by paramedics and taken to hospital.
PC Ahmed said: "I knew I had a major fight on my hands to stay alive and do my best to help the lady when we both hit the water"
"It was at this point I felt someone grab hold of my ankles just as I was going past the point of no return. This stopped myself and the lady from continuing our journey into the river."
I think this story is very moving and it shows the amount of dedication some people have towards their jobs and people in society. If this man and others around him acted differently to how they did it could have resulted i a completely different news case of which lives could have been lost.It makes you want o aspire t be like them as he is labelled a hero and it must feel amazing to save someones life with such risk, it shows that not everyone is self centred and there is god people out there.

censorship in media

Censorship

    What is Censorship?

Censorship is the suppression of speech, public communication or other information which may be considered objectionable, harmful or sensitive to an audience through media. An example of this is the age rating for films, television programs, and games which separate them into different categories depending on the content suitable for certain age groups. In the UK the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) is responsible for the national classification and censorship of films and determines what people can view and not view.
It is against the law to sell an over age rated item to anyone who is under the age of the stated age rating, shop keepers can be fined if this occurs due to the risk of exposure of sexual scenes, violence, bad language and overall adult scenes.

Why do we need censorship?

If we didn't have censorship young children could be exposed to things that are not meant to be seen by a child of that age, they would be able to access inappropriate websites such as porn or scamming websites. Without censorship there would be no boundaries on what is presented to who and no one would be aware of what the film, game or TV show contains and could offend people due to the fact different people have different opinions and views on what the media may contain, such as racist jokes, sexual humour or gender/disability jokes which may offend certain individuals which is a good example for needing censorship within media.

Just as certain things in the media outlets are restricted from being exposed to easily impressionable children, the representation of certain groups within society such as people with disabilities, different religions and the general appearance of certain people is something that has caused discussion between the general public , specifically parents concerned in what their children are introduced to on TV or even in stories/magazines . An example of this continuing the representation of a group of people is Cerrie Burnell who was assigned as a presenter of the children's TV channel CBeebies.
Cerrie joined the CBeebies team six years ago and had received complaints from parents soon after she appeared on the channel due to the fact she had half an arm. They believed that it would frighten their children and that i was a difficult subject to explain to them.

I believe that it is a good ting that this is not censored from children as it creates knowledge that everybody is different but we are all human no matter what the disability. It also creates a norm from a young age showing that these things are normal and its nothing to be frightened about.

Who runs censorship in the media?

Censorship in the media is run by the government and large media companies. Because the government are the source of the censorship, it means that the publics view on different subjects are changed to make the government look better by not exposing us to what will make them look bad. Censorship can reach extreme levels in different countries where citizens of that country are restricted to watching news, videos or any other source of media to do with other countries governments due to beliefs that it will corrupt the views on their own country. Censorship is national and has different regulations in each country according to their government and age limits set to view certain footage and information.

In my opinion censoring is good as it protects the younger generation from being influenced by media outlets that will influence them on a long term or short term basis due to the events shown throughout films, video gams and websites. However most people do not abide by these terms and buy whatever they want no matter the age.

Weekly News

BBC News...

A man has been charged with murdering four men, including a warehouse worker, a student and a would-be chef.
Stephen Port, 40, of Cooke Street, Barking, east London, is accused of killing the men in the area between June 2014 and September this year, Scotland Yard said...  'Mr Port has also been charged with four counts of poisoning with intent to endanger life.He will appear at Barkingside Magistrates' Court on Monday'.

The charges relate to the deaths of:
  • Anthony Patrick Walgate, 23, from Barnet, who was pronounced dead on Cooke Street on 19 June 2014
  • Gabriel Kovari, 22, from Lewisham, whose body was found near the churchyard of St Margaret's Church, North Street, Barking, on 28 August 2014
  • Jack Taylor, 25, from Dagenham, whose body was found near the Abbey Ruins close to North Street on 14 September this year
  • Daniel Whitworth, 21, from Gravesend, Kent, whose body was also found near the same churchyard on 20 September 2014
Jack Taylor was a night-duty fork-lift truck driver at a warehouse and was last seen by friends on a night out in Barking on 13 September.
This is a horrific story and shows how nobody knows whats round the corner. Stephen Port met these young men online and invited them back to his house, where he drugged and killed the men, then dumped them just a 5 minute walk from his home. I think its terrible how the authorities have taken this long to find this murderer as the first killings where just months apart and then Jack Taylor was found almost a year later. i see this as poor investigation and it wouldn't be easy for the families who didn't know who killed their relatives, and it shouldn't have taken this long to link them together.

Suffragette Premiere In London

Suffragette

Last week my media group and i went to see the premiere of the film suffragette at the London BFI Film Festival. The film was very dramatic and moving and told an inspirational story of the lives of suffragette women.

The scenery and clothing had a big impact on the film as it was clear of the time frame it was set. The style of dress differed between social class and this gave us clear vision who was more important and wealthier in society.

All the different camera shots used have a massive influence on the impact of the film.

This angled close up shows us the London surroundings, It shows Maud looking up to Big Ben which could suggest her looking up towards parliament to show her fight against them. It highlights the expression in her face which also gave me the idea of the determination to win against the sexist society.

This extreme close up focuses on the interlocking of two women's hands, this gives an idea of the representation of women coming together as one to fight for their freedom and equality. It creates a sense of solidarity between the women and it does this without any speech or explanation.

Long shots have great informational value about surroundings, characters and lifestyle. This image shows the amount of women supporting the suffragette's and campaigning for their rights outside parliament, we can tell this from the signs and the guards all in one simple shot, it zooms in towards the women protesting gradually to show a sense of remorse on how many women are fighting for their right of freedom.

All the sound effects throughout this trailer give you a sense of what it is like in the film, The sound effects, including the enhancements of 'bangs' creates a feel of actually being on set and experiencing the horror they did to get their point across. The flashing images and the focus on the environment and the characters actions increase the dramatic essence of the film. It also draws you in to the understandings of why the suffragette's are doing what they are doing and creates a clear view of what women in the 1900's had to deal with in terms of gender discrimination. Women are presented in this film as underprivileged, working class citizens who obtain no rights in the patriarchal society.

Overall this eye opening film on how the women in the 1900's fought for our vote and for the equality of women is very inspiring, it creates a heart warming realization of reality that women wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for the suffragette's. Without the fight and surrender of lives of the suffragette's we would not be living such an equal life today with all the power and rights that we are privileged with.

The Hoverboards craze becoming illegal in public places

Sky News

They have become a recurring annoyance for pedestrians on busy footpaths – but now, a crackdown on "hoverboards" in public could be on the horizon.
Londoners who are thinking of investing in a self-balancing scooter are being urged to reconsider by the Metropolitan Police, as a 180-year-old law means they can only be used on private land.
Although they are powered vehicles, hoverboards are too unsafe to use on British roads, and cannot be licensed or registered under the Highway Act 1835.
But in England, Wales and Scotland, it is also an offence to take it for a spin on the pavement, as it can prove to be a dangerous hazard for others.
Guidance from the Department for Transport says: "You can only ride an unregistered self-balancing scooter on land which is private property, and with the landowner's permission."
Hoverboards have enjoyed an explosion in popularity recently – with Justin Bieber, Chris Brown and Kylie Jenner just some of the celebrities snapped on the "personal motorized transporters".
It seems unlikely that any enthusiasts will be prosecuted for whizzing down the street on a self-balancing scooter, yet offending Segway users have faced court action in the past.
Back in January 2011, an unemployed factory worker became the first person in the UK to be convicted of riding a Segway on the pavement – and was slapped with a £75 fine.
At the time, campaigners who were pushing for wider Segway use expressed outrage at the ruling.
The vehicles do have form for veering off course unexpectedly – even making it difficult for the world's fastest man to leap out of the way in time.
In August, Usain Bolt was flattened by a cameraman on a Segway just moments after winning the 200m gold medal at the World Athletics Championships in Beijing.

AS Media Trip To London

To Suffragette We Go...

Friday the 9th of September me and my amazing (some of them) media group went on a trip to London to go to the BFI London Film Festival. Our teacher Barrington succeeded at his job of not to kill any of us, and making sure nothing killed us due to the paperwork. We traveled on plenty of trains which surprisingly,  no one decided to wander off in the distance or get lost, which is good for us. We saw the premiere of the film suffragette in Haymarket and this was our journey....

This was taken on the train, of the London Eye ...

Finally arriving at London Waterloo...

The National Gallery...

There's Emma and George the Fourth on his horse in Trafalgar square...

I love this horse if you can tell...

There's the horse again...

 Here's Graham. (at cine-world)

We don't know these people but its all about making friends...

Finally made it to the premiere and saw Suffragette...

Overall we had a really good day and i thought the film was very good.

Crash (2004)

Visual and Audio Codes

 Crash

Whats it all about?

Crash is an inspirational movie set in Los Angeles. Ordinary American citizens with very separate and different lifestyles interweaving in stories of race, loss and redemption. Each character has to deal with the tense race relations that occur in the city.

Among the characters are: the Caucasian district attorney, who uses race as a political card; his Caucasian wife, who, having recently been carjacked by two black men, believes that her stereotypical views of non-whites is justified and cannot be considered racism; the two black carjackers who use their race both to their advantage and as an excuse; partnered Caucasian police constables, one who is a racist and uses his authority to harass non-whites, and the other who hates his partner because of those racist views, but who may have the same underlying values in his subconscious; a black film director and his black wife, who believes her husband doesn't support their black background enough, especially in light of an incident with the racist white cop; partnered police detectives and sometimes lovers, one Hispanic female and the other black male, the latter who is dealing with a drugged out mother that feels he isn't concerned enough about taking care of family; an East Asian man who is run over but who is hiding some valuable cargo in the back of his van; a Persian store owner, who feels he isn't getting satisfaction from American society when his store is robbed time and time again; and a Hispanic locksmith, who just wants to keep his family, especially his young daughter, safe in a seemingly unsafe world.

Technical and Audio codes

There are many music tracks in this film which portray the drama genre, the music creates suspense and helps us embrace the story line and understand the mood they want to create. Voice overs are used to give a sense of the past, it also fills us in on the information that is not shown during the film that we need to understand the plot.

The directors use many different camera shots. They used long shots to create a wider view of the surroundings and the positions of the characters from a greater scale to give the viewers non verbal information. Close ups are also used to create emotion and to show the effect racism has on society and how it makes people feel, they also help the viewer to understand what the directors are trying to highlight to get a message across.

Representation

Representation of Age

How Age Is Represented In Media

There are four outlined categories of age highlighted in society, these include children, teenagers, adults and the elderly. Age is represented to society in many ways, people get stereotyped by others due to what other people around them think because who doesn't want to fit in right? There is both negative and positive representation, both which influence the opinion of others. Not all stereotypes are  necessarily shown in the media however the representation of minor stories contributes to the views of certain age groups in society. Representations are constructed by the media to elicit a response from an audience, these responses are what structure the ageist views of society today.

The Elderly

The elderly are predominantly depicted as sweet and vulnerable. News stories that show elderly as crime victims are prime examples this. Headlines like 'elderly women scammed out of her life savings' create an aspect of remorse, Such stories also perpetuate the stereotype of elders as being warm, but incompetent figures who deserve our pity. Older people are characterized as vulnerable and in need of protection and charity. This stereotype can be problematic as not all elderly people have seen the worst of their days and are still going strong, however the media portrays this image to society and how the elderly group are victimized more harshly than just individuals giving the impression to others that all elderly citizens are the same.

Young People

Teenagers in society are portrayed in many ways. Everybody has the image of moody, spotty, hormonal individuals when the word teenager is mentioned right? Many people may have other views which are gang related, these stereotypes for example, would have strongly been influenced by the London riots. The riots largely impacted views of society and portrayed that most teenagers were at fault, many innocent people got the blame of some of the damage when in fact they where innocent.  The older generation often categorize younger people as being rude, thoughtless and disrespectful.  This is not helped by their portrayal in the media and leads to preconceived expectations of how they will behave.  Often these expectations are unfounded, and means that younger people have to work harder to gain respect.

People are much deeper than stereotypes. That's the first place our minds go. Then you get to know them and you hear their stories, and you say, 'I'd have never guessed.'Carson Kressley

This Girl Can

We Can Do It

'This Girl Can' is an extremely powerful advert about women doing their own thing, no matter how they look, act or smell. It shows the encouragement of women today and how we, as women, can all battle the pressure from the media and be our own person, doing what we want and how we want with no judgement.

Firstly we see, what the media and society influenced by the media an 'overweight' women about to go swimming. Everyone gets weggies right? men and women, and this women has no shame of removing it. The enhanced slap sound that occurs when she flings her bikini bottoms back into place is humorous and fits in with the music perfectly creating more effect. This goes against the ideologies of women being skinny and having the perfect bodies and influences us that its alright not to be a twig and be happy with what we got.  She is walking away from the camera and the camera is following her, this draws you closer and focuses on the main points of this specific point in the advert. The continuous music may highlight the strength of women and how we should keep going to achieve our goals. There is a few pauses in the music, when they stop and heavy breathe,  which may indicate that everybody has moments when they feel like quitting and are unable to carry on. However the continuation of the music after suggests that if you keep trying you can get anywhere in life.

The term 'sweating like a pig' is traditionally used for men and this is what makes this advert inspiring. It shows that women sweat too and why should we be bothered by it? the stereotypical view on sports is that men are more involved and what are women? This adverts highlights the fact that we are all the same and all have the same determination whether its sports or dancing. 'Damn right I look hot' comes up too, this is a strong message for women as it communicates that women have self determination and the stereotype of men being strong and sporty should apply for women too. It also shows that determination is sexy and everyone should try to succeed at what they want to do in life.

Not every women has to be a 'tom boy' for liking certain sports, women can also be whatever they aspire to be. It does not question your femininity it just bends stereotypes and that's why a representative of boxing is good to show on this advert. It shows that you can still have a perfect manicure or a 'cute' face full of makeup and still be aggressive and fight like a man. this advert shows that women and men are both equal and should be treated and respected in a non stereotypical manor.

This advert doesn't just show us that women are equal to men and people shouldn't worry about our shape or size or how we look and act, it shows us that all race, disability and culture combine together due to all of this shown collaboratively in the advert. It shows that we are all fighting the same battle and not let society change who and what we are.
